When I was going to the supermarket, I usually being interested to buy some fruits. But sometimes I did not buy for the reason, that buying some fruit make me spend more times at the supermarket, especially for checking the price. But now, there a product to ease that. This product is a scales that is made of the Fraunhofer Institute for Information and Data Processing and Mettler Toledo. This product’s advantages is that it can distinguish between an apple or an orange automatically.
The scales use a digital camera to take the photograph of the item, and an algorithm is used to compare the photograph with the database of fruits and vegetables to extrapolate what it is. For something, like tomatoes, that have many different varieties but might look the same, the customer is presented with many different icons on the screen and is asked to specify between hot house or field varieties. The system is apparently even savvy enough to recognize items that have been placed in a plastic bag, and has a high tolerance or color and brightness fluctuations resulting from many lighting conditions.
